Sydney Water, Jemena and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) recently announced a jointly funded project to trial injecting biomethane into the natural gas network in NSW.
The $14 million project1 will upgrade biogas produced from the anaerobic digestion process at Sydney Water’s Malabar Wastewater Treatment Plant to biomethane and injected into the Jemena natural gas network.
The installation of gas cleaning and upgrading equipment within Malabar will be the first step in the project, followed by connecting the infrastructure to Jemena’s network. Initially, Sydney Water is expected to supply 95TJs per year of zero emission biomethane, with long-term plans extending to 200TJs per year, equivalent to the gas demand of over 13,000 homes2.
Potentially, Jemena believes there is enough biogas to supply 1.4 million households in NSW, and supply zero-emission renewable gas into the grid. This is good news for the circular economy, and our planet as we all are responsible for coming up with ways to lower carbon emissions.
