The NSW government strives to deliver transport services and operations that balances economic, environment, and social issues with a focus on sustainability.

It is well recognised within the asset management sector that climate change brings stress to transport assets. Extreme weather and physical impacts caused by rising temperatures and natural disasters make risk assessment and asset management a crucial element within governments.

TfNSW acknowledges resilience among its existing assets, particularly older roads, may not be effective for future climate impacts, and therefore many are under significant risk of damage and failure. New road assets must also be designed and built with adaptation measures.

Effective asset management reduces the overall cost of the asset over its lifecycle. It is therefore prudent to investigate tools that respond to shocks and damages caused by climate change, and implement new design methodologies and technologies for maintenance and construction in ways that enhance resilience1.
