Presentation 1: Digital technology enabling a customer centric asset management approach

In this session, we will explore how customer data and participation can unlock value and overcome uncertainty.  The presentation will discuss how digital capability strategy underpins/ enables Western Power’s corporate strategy.  It will explore asset architecture using smart grid architecture model and how application of digital technology is transforming the way asset management is undertaken at Western Power.  We will hear case study applications on how intuitive application of digital approach is transforming approach to asset management, unlocking potential value in existing assets, enabling customer and market benefits, whilst improving safety, reliability and economic performance of the assets.

Matt Cheney, Chief Technology Officer, Business Intelligence & Technology

Matt is a recognised leader in the energy industry with more than 20 years working in business and management systems, planning, operations and service delivery.

Once an Electrical Engineering Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force, Matt was appointed as Western Power’s inaugural Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in October 2020.

As CTO, Matt’s responsible for building and growing Western Power’s new Business Intelligence and Technology team to deliver a whole‐of‐organisation approach to technology, cyber security and data‐driven business intelligence.

With a demonstrated ability to lead and achieve transformational change, Matt brings to the CTO role a deep understanding of Western Power and the evolving digital and data environment needed to keep the business at the forefront of the energy industry.

Since joining Western Power in 2009, he’s initiated and led industry‐changing projects that have changed Western Power’s way of doing business including grid transformation and performance, and operational maintenance.

Initially joining Western Power on the smart grid team, Matt compiled the specifications for the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) pilot. Eleven years later, he’s been pivotal in influencing and supporting his colleagues, executive, board, and industry to adopt a different way of thinking about how we serve our customers and community.

Matt’s success to date was recognised at the 2019 WA Energy Awards as the joint winner of the Energy Professional of the Year.

Matt holds a BEng (Aerospace Avionics) from the Queensland University of Technology.

 

Presentation 2: Experiences with Digital Asset Management Journey in the Water Industry

Water Corporation has been on a digital asset management journey for over five years, building improved capability in how work is planned, scheduled and executed in the field in addition to uplifting asset information.  Implementation of digital capability in these focus areas has driven new ways of working and better outcomes.  Water Corporation will share insights gained in their journey to date, including key elements for success.

Helen Forte, Head of Asset Strategy, Assets Planning and Delivery Group, Water Corporation

Helen has over 15 years experience in the Western Australian water industry working in policy and strategy roles within government agencies, as well as, a number of roles within the Water Corporation.  Helen holds a Bachelor of Science and an Executive Masters in Public Administration.  Helen is currently Head of Asset Strategy at the Water Corporation and has responsibility for asset management governance, setting strategic direction for asset outcomes, the corporate Research and Development Program and regulatory engagement on water matters. 

 

 

Presentation 3: Deploying digital technology to manage asset risk-cost-performance remotely

The energy and natural resources sector have been challenged by unprecedented issues over the past few years.  The approach organisations have taken to address these challenges presents a long-term opportunity for smart organisations to work in a more efficient way.  This presentation will discuss the use of digital technologies and new operating models to manage the risk, cost and performance of assets remotely.

Dr Yvonne Power, Director, IMPower Technologies

Dr Yvonne Power is an experienced leader in the Energy and Natural Resources (ENR) sector with over twenty years of national and international experience, developing and successfully introducing advanced and award-winning technologies into large scale operations.  She has a track record of turning around and leading change for complex, technically challenging technology projects, making them feasible, sustainable and supportable, so that value is delivered across all organisational levels.

Dr Power has worked for advanced technology providers, within large scale operations (globally), as a consultant and company director.  As director of IMPOWER™, Dr Power has consulted on digital asset management to some of the world’s largest resource organisation.  She has authored and presented around thirty conference papers and journal articles in her area of expertise.
