Sydney Water, Jemena and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) recently announced a jointly funded project to trial injecting biomethane into the natural gas network in NSW.

The $14 million project¹ will upgrade biogas produced from the anaerobic digestion process at Sydney Water’s Malabar Wastewater Treatment Plant to biomethane and injected into the Jemena natural gas network.

The Australian government, through its Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), is to provide $18 million dollars in grant funding to develop Australia’s second energy-from-waste plant, based in Western Australia.

The facility in East Rockingham is expected to process 300,000 tonees of residual waste from non-recyclable waste, delivering 29MW of baseload electricity capacity. That’s enough to provide power to more than 36,000 homes¹.

Hazelwood is a 4000 hectare site that includes among the defunct brown coal-fired power station, a 1281 hectare mine void, operational switchyard, a 524 hectare pondage, as well as landfill and dump areas¹. It is owned by Engie, a French-based energy provider.
