Recently, the Asset Management Council’s Brisbane Chapter held a technical session with over 90 engineering and asset management professionals in attendance. Leading the event was the Brisbane chapter chair, Gopinath Chattopadhyay. Speakers who present from the Queensland Government and the Queensland Audit Office include Neil Scales, David Adams, Sandra Heidrich, and Patrick Fleming.
For one example of a the event’s speakers, Neil Scales from the Department of Transport and Main Roads presented on the Queensland government’s asset management strategies. Queensland has over 1.7 million square kilometres in area, over 33,000 km of state-controlled roads and busways, and 7,000 km of rail network that all present many different challenges. On top of this, DTMR also manages over $289 million in maritime assets and boating infrastructure.
With all of these assets in mind, Neil highlighted how DTMR manages them through their Asset Management Framework with a “fix it first” approach that provides fit-for-purpose transport solutions. For the Queensland government, regular planning is among their highest priorities. Their strategy starts at inventory management, moving towards condition assessments, before checking performance modelling. For the second half of his presentation, Neil talked about the current shifts in asset management demand, asset investment options, and innovation in their future projects.
