With over 200 electricity substations, 500,000 power poles, 30,000 distribution substations and almost 50,000km of below and above ground electricity cables, the Ausgrid electricity network provides power to over 1.6 million homes and businesses throughout the greater Sydney area…
Started in 2009, the Sydney CityGrid project is Ausgrid’s plan for the CBD electricity supply over the next decade and beyond. It involved constructing new zone substations, replacing and upgrading high voltage cables, and constructing a new tunnel to link into the existing network of CBD cable tunnels. The Sydney CityGrid project has expanded Sydney’s electricity network to support the growth of the CBD, and allowed Ausgrid to meet new licence conditions to build extra back-up capability into the CBD network for further enhancement of high-reliability power supply to businesses and residents in the city centre.
Below is a video created at the start of the CityGrid project that highlights key attributes and goals of the plan.
At this year’s AMPEAK Conference (only 5 weeks away), guests who register for the Thursday 28 May site visits will be able to tour Ausgrid’s newly constructed Belmore Park substation (as seen in the video!) or the ANSTO campus.
