A Short Employment Biography: Gary is the National Business Development Manager for John Holland’s Rail Business. In 2010 he developed a winning proposal for John Holland to manage the NSW Country Regional Network which involves asset management and operational management of that major rail network for the next 10 years.
Gary has over 30 years experience in the rail sector and has held executive roles all of which carried a strong focus on the asset management of complex rail networks. Gary has held Chief Executive Officer, General Manager and Non-Executive Director with the Rail Infrastructure Corporation (RIC) and was the Group General Manager, Asset Management at RailCorp.
Gary is a long term member and active supporter of the Asset Management Council. In past roles with RIC, and later RailCorp, Gary has been involved in two successful Asset Management Excellence Awards submissions both of which achieved silver. Gary holds the Asset Management Council Steve Maxwell Leadership Award for his long term leadership in establishing asset management capability in RailCorp and its predecessors.
Gary had the privilege of watching both Steve Maxwell and Jim Kennedy as they developed the basis of asset management in the rail industry more than 20 years ago and has worked to promote the discipline since.
Whilst commencing his career as an engineer Gary has broadened into business with a Masters in Management and completion of Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management program. He is also holds AICD accreditation as a Director.
Looking Forward to as Chapter Chair: Working with colleagues with a similar passion to define and promote consistent competencies and processes necessary to establish this relatively new discipline. Pursuing education and debate at Board level within organisations on the use of asset management to achieve their objectives.
Areas of interest in Asset Management: My interest lies in the integration of asset management principles into the governance and management of organisations as sound business practice. Business is driven by a consideration of both risk and reward and for those asset intensive organisations asset management provides the tools necessary to inform such decisions. I believe asset management has been poorly understood in many organisations with most viewing it as a technical area that supports lower level decisions.
Thoughts on an ISO Standard for Asset Management: The development and adoption of international standards provides confidence to clients, stakeholders and the organisations using those standards. Providing such confidence will be an important step in organisations using asset management as a necessary part of achieving their objectives.
