The SSN-AUKUS is a planned class of nuclear-powered fleet submarine intended to enter service with the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy in the late 2030s and Royal Australian Navy in the 2040s. The class will replace the UK’s Astute class and Australia’s Collins class submarines.
This presentation will provide a technical overview on AUKUS and nuclear-powered submarines from an Asset management perspective on one of the world’s most complex asset.
Chris Saint, Domain Engineering Manager (Submarines and Nuclear), Babcock Australasia
Chris Saint is Babcock Australasia’s Domain Engineering Manager for submarines and nuclear. He is tasked with capability management and development in preparation for AUKUS, in particular planning ahead of the nation’s new nuclear-powered submarines. Over the past 10 years, Chris has held several positions at Babcock, including the Naval Nuclear Head of Engineering Capability and Technical Services Alliance in Devonport, UK. He has also worked as a Safety Case Engineer and Naval Base Project Engineer. Chris began his career in the Royal Navy, where he worked in various engineering roles. Chris holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical and Manufacturing) from the University of Portsmouth.

A dynamic, resilient and passionate strategic asset management senior consultant with WSP, Tanya develops and implements asset management deliverables into existing business practices. Tanya has worked both for consultancies and road authorities gaining extensive experience in Australia and the United Kingdom across an asset management environment, design and construction, including bridge inspections & assessments, structural design (including construction verification) & contract/project management.
Sharing the journey of “Young professionals in Asset Management” and inspiring others to embrace a “Whole of life” Asset philosophy. This session will be an overview of guest speaker Mary Nguyen’s professional journey and her contribution to asset management at Sydney Trains.

Mary Nguyen, Master Program Manager, Sydney Trains
Mary Nguyen is the Master Program Manager at Sydney Trains, coordinating critical construction, design and track work resources to best deliver the annual $1.5bil maintenance and capital works programs.
In 2021, Mary won the Australasian Rai Industry Awards’ Young Rail Professional Award. Mary’s engineering and planning knowledge has led to the development of multiple innovative solutions for one of the organisation’s most complex areas – track possession management, which involves long-term planning, coordination of hundreds of worksites, safety management and train movements in consultation with multiple stakeholders across Transport for NSW Cluster. She is also an active advocate for diversity and gender equality in the rail industry.
In 2022,Transurban (with the support of its incident response and maintenance contractor, Ventia) achieved significant sustainability outcomes at its Hills M2 Motorway asset. Innovative solutions were deployed, in line with asset management best practice, resulting in success in diverting waste from landfill, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, generating biodiversity value and enhancing customer travel.
Independent verification of the sustainability outcomes was undertaken by using the Infrastructure Sustainability Council’s IS Operations rating scheme, and the Hills M2 Motorway was subsequently certified at an “Excellent Operations IS Rating”, with a score of 69 points-the highest operations rating within the industry
Colin Rymer, Head of Asset Management Systems and Governance, Transurban
Colin has extensive asset management, strategy and commercial experience across infrastructure, utilities and aircraft. He has worked at Transurban for the last 8 years supporting the NSW motorways to improve asset performance for our road users. Prior to Transurban, Colin worked with Sydney Water and the Royal Australian Air Force in the fields of asset management, logistics and maintenance support. Colin has a Doctorate of Business Administration and is passionate about leadership and high performing teams.
Troy Mattiazzo, Maintenance Manager, Ventia
Troy is the Incident Response and Maintenance Manager for Ventia’s NSW Motorway and Tunnel contracts with Transurban. Troy’s experience includes working within Transurban’s asset management framework to deliver civil maintenance across the Eastern Distributor, Cross City Tunnel, Lane Cove Tunnel, Hills M2 Motorway and M5 Southwest Motorway.
Troy is passionate about sustainability and innovation and is constantly working on initiatives that deliver better outcomes for stakeholders. One of the most recent initiatives that Troy has helped to champion is the deployment of the new Electric Incident Response Truck, that is expected to save around 50 tonnes of carbon dioxide and equivalent gases per annum.
