AMCouncil Melbourne Chapter members were invited to a site tour of the Toyota Hydrogen Demonstration Centre in Altona yesterday where delegates were treated to a guided tour of the education centre and Victoria’s first hydrogen refuelling station. The tour began with a walking presentation to learn all about hydrogen, what it is, where it comes from, how it’s produced, fuel cells and how they work in the context of the Toyota Mirai vehicle, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, followed by a demonstration of the hydrogen refuelling station when a well-timed Toyota Mirai driver happen to pull up to refuel his vehicle. A very interesting visit.

Toyota Australia’s President and CEO Matt Callachor has been quoted as saying*:

“Hydrogen has the potential to play a pivotal role in the future because it can be used to store and transport energy from wind, solar and other renewable sources to power many things, including vehicles like the Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV).”

“Right now, the biggest factor to the success of hydrogen being widely available is the lack of infrastructure. The sooner we move to a zero emissions society, the better…”
